어느 병자의 기도

 

큰일을 하려고 능력을 달라고 하느님께 구하였더니

조심해서 순종하도록 약함을 주셨습니다.

 

보다 위대한 일을 할 수 있도록 건강을 구했는데

보다 좋은 일을 할 수 있도록 병을 주셨습니다.

 

행복하게 되려고 부를 구했는데

바르고 현명하게 살도록 가난을 주셨습니다.

 

세상 사람들을 얻으려고 권력을 구했는데

하느님 앞에 무릎을 끓도록 약함을 주셨습니다.

 

인생을 향락하려고 모든 것을 구했는데

모든 것을 기뻐하도록 영생을 주셨습니다.

 

구한 것은 하나도 안주셨지만

소원은 모두 들어 주셨습니다.

 

 

A Creed for Those Who Have Suffered

 

I asked God for strength that I might achieve;

 

I was made weak that I might learn humbly to obey.

 

 

I asked for health that I might do greater things;

 

I was given infirmity that I might do better things.

 

I asked for riches that I might be happy;

 

I was given poverty that I might be wise.

 

I asked for power that I might have praise of men;

 

I was given weakness that I might feel the need of God.

 

I asked for all things that I might enjoy life;

 

I was given life that I might enjoy all things.

 

I got nothing that I asked for, but everything I had hoped for.

 

Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.

 

I am, among all men, most richly blessed.
